Part-Time Park Officer
Pay Grade: $19.89
Unit: Conservation
FLSA: Non-Exempt

Hourly rate is $19.89, no benefits.

Flexible hours: shifts available to work;
  • Monday-Thursday, 6:00 p.m. – 10:30 p.m.
  • Weekend duty
    • Friday 6:00 p.m. – 2:00 a.m.
    • Saturday 8:00 a.m. – 6:30 p.m.
    • Saturday night shift 6:00 p.m. – 2:00 a.m.
    • Sunday 8:00 a.m. – 6:30 p.m.
    • Sunday 2:00 p.m. – 10:30 p.m.
Officer will primarily patrol throughout the county parks, in a County Conservation patrol unit, however, duties may involve trail enforcement operating an ATV patrol unit.

County provides the following:
  • Uniform
  • Portable radio
Duty belt and weapon are the responsibility of officer.

Distinguishing Features of the Class:

Under general supervision, assigned to the Park Advocacy Unit, assigned and scheduled to patrol the areas managed by the Polk County Conservation, enforcing state, county & local laws.

Illustrative Examples of Duties:
  • Patrols park areas enforcing laws/regulations pertaining to the operation of county parks; issues summons, and may arrest persons violating state, federal, or local laws/regulations; may counsel, advise, or detain individuals whose actions endanger persons/property; cooperates/coordinates with local law enforcement agency activities; keeps the Supervisor apprised of activities.
  • While on patrol, they will monitor/evaluate facilities/premises to ensure they are safe/well maintained. With reports of unsafe conditions reported to the Shift Supervisor.
  • Collects fees from users of park facilities.
  • Provides for the safety of visitors, including the administering of first aid in emergencies.
  • Write detailed and accurate reports to document all on duty activities. Submit all required reports at the end of the shift.
Training and Experience:
  • High School graduate or equivalent, and
  • Any equivalent combination of training and experience which will have provided the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Special Requirement:
  • Successful completion of the Basic Training School of the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy.

Campground Aid

Camp rent-free at one of Polk County Conservation’s campgrounds during the peak recreation season!

The Polk County Conservation Board is seeking applications for campground aides.

The campground aide will have his or her overnight camping, firewood, and utility fees waived in exchange for cleaning one of the shower houses located within the campgrounds. The season generally runs from May until October 15th.

Two Full-Time AmeriCorps Positions Available with Polk County Conservation Board

For a minimum of 1700 hours of service over the course of 12 months, full-time members receive a modest living allowance of $12,000 and an education award of $4,725.

County Ecosystem Management Aide
-Coordinate volunteer engagement projects including (natural playscape improvements, invasive species removal, etc.)
-Plant/restore prairies, trees, and native ecosystems
-Conduct improvments of the Polk County trails
-Prune and remove trees and limbs using modern tree maintenance equipment
-Collect native seed and remove invasive species
-Improve timber stands
-Use chain saws, hand tools, and skid steer
-Apply herbicide and manage prescribed burns of prairies, savannahs, and timber (pesticide license needed)
-Design and implement AmeriCorps community service projects
-Generate volunteers

County Construction Enhancement Aide
-Enhance Polk County facilities and parks, utilized by more than 1.4 million visitors annually
-Help coordinate volunteer activities within the construction/maintenance unit
-Assist with construction, renovation, and repair of county conservation facilities and equipment
-Perform electrical, plumbling, masonry, woodwork skills on projects
-Assist in renovating county use areas making them safer and ADA compliant
-Maintain and safely operate equipment such as hand and power hand tools, saws, laser levels, etc.
-Design and implement AmeriCorps community service projects
-Generates volunteers

AmeriCorps members receive a living allowance, an education award at the successful completion of service and housing if available. Members must be United States citizens, United States nationals, or legal permanent resident aliens, at least 17 years old and have a high school diploma or GED or agree to obtain one while serving. These positions are funded by an AmeriCorps grant and as such requires the successful candidate to complete all of the required activities as outlined in the member handbook and contract.
